Fuselage Completion #18 (Elevator trim knob and pitot/static routing)

Posted by on July 4, 2015

Total Build Time: 988 Hours

This post includes the installation of of my elevator trim knob and my plans for routing of my pitot/static and LRI (lift reserve indicator) tube connections.

My elevator trim knob will be located on the lower left side of my instrument panel. I located it to be as far from the side panel as possible (in order to stay clear of my upholstery) while still providing good edge distance on my bolt holes.

First I used some thin scrap material to duplicate the bolt holes on the trim knob assembly.

I used this template to transfer the holes onto the lower left instrument panel bracket (the precise name for this part escapes me, but the designation is WIX-F7-05.) There was a pre-drilled hole in this part, though I’m not sure why it’s there. It didn’t affect my new bolt holes however. I wanted it snug though, so when i connect the tubing it’s less likely to push the fittings through the grommets.

Below are pictures of the trim knob in its final location. The routing of the cables from the knob will come later.

For my pitot/static/LRI lines, I fabricated some brackets to provide connection points between the lines coming from the wings and into the cockpit.

The pitot/static lines are 1/4″ ID, while the LRI lines are 3/16″ ID. I sourced some barbed fittings from Grainger that will fit snugly into rubber grommets within the brackets. The material is Kynar and it is quite rubust. The fit was very tight (which I wanted) and I think nylon fittings would have broken with the force it took to put everything into place on the brackets.

The following 2 pictures are the location of the right-side bracket for the pitot/static lines. I drilled out 2 rivet holes in the side fuselage and used those holes to locate the brackets.

For the lines on the left side (for the LRI) I angled the bracket to keep the lines clear of the flap/brake handles:

Once the glareshield is permanently installed and my electrical wiring finalized, I’ll run tubes from these brackets to my instruments. Then all that remains is to install the wings and connect the lines to the bottom of these brackets.
